Lady Eagles Lose Heartbreakers

Freshman Shari Buford goes up for the jumper against Newberry

Carson Newman suffered their second straight conference loss falling to the Newberry Indians in overtime 73-79 in Holt Fieldhouse. Shari Buford had a career night with 22 points in the losing effort. The Lady Eagles trailed 35-34 at halftime and shot 56 % from the field. With six minutes left to go in regulation and the game tied at 57 apiece there were four different lead changes. Ashley Tipton gave the Eagles a three point lead with 1:02 remaining in regulation; but, Newberry sent the game into overtime and hit five consecutive free throws at the end to nail down the win. The Lady Indians used a 9-0 second half run to lead the upset. Free throws did the Eagles in with Catawba hitting five clutch free throws in the final minute to hand them their third loss of the year. Ashley Tipton and Stephanie Holbrook each had 12 points. Shari Buford grabbed a game high 11 rebounds.

The 22nd ranked Lady Eagles look to bounce back against Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday, Feb. 10, 6:00 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
