Yearbook Wins National Award

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association has recognized the 2005-2006 edition of "The Appalachian" yearbook for excellence in student journalism. The yearbook received one of the Collegiate Gold Circle Awards, and competed against some of the top universities across the nation.There were many areas that yearbooks were judged in, such as photos, writing, and use of graphics. The Carson Newman yearbook placed in 5 of these categories and even took first place for the best color spread, winning over universities such as University of Texas, Western Kentucky, and Virginia Tech.

"The Appalachian" also took second place in Feature presentation category, and third place in the General Use of Graphics section, and the index section. A Certificate of Merit was also received by the yearbook for its academic spread.

According to the Collegiate Scholastic Press Association, the Feature Presentation award was based on an unusual feature from any section, and judged on subject selection, writing, photography, and design. To receive the General Use of Graphics, one spread chosen by the staff was picked to compete. The index section was judged on the overall presentation of the index, including graphics and photography and layout.

The 2005-2006 yearbook staff was led by Editor-In-Chief Jennifer Stinson, who is currently a graduate student at UT, and also by the associate editors Marsha Cox and Jenni Gann.
