Activities on campus came to a standstill Friday morning when strong winds toppled a tree and shut down power. No injuries were reported, but, Russell Avenue was completely blocked by the fallen tree between Swann Hall and Butler Hall that was uprooted shortly after 11 a.m. Two vehicles parked in front of the Administration Building sustained damage. Appalachian Electric workers were able to restore power to the campus about 35 minutes later. The Jefferson City Fire and Public Works Departments removed the tree and traffic resumed by mid-afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Morristown reported wind gusts in the area Friday morning between 50 and 90 miles-per-hour.
