Appalachian Outreach honors 25 years of service to Jefferson County and the greater East Tennessee area in August, but is kicking off the celebration with their anniversary banquet on March 12 in the cafeteria.

"AO started in August 25 years ago, so we're celebrating for a full year," Director Jean Washam said.

Forensics Claims Fourth Consecutive State Title

The Forensics Team kept their streak alive by winning its fourth consecutive Tennessee Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament title. The event was held at Walters State Community College in Morristown.

"When this group comes together and is operating on all cylinders, good things happen," said Chip Hall, director of the program and instructor in C-N's communication department.

Proposal Considers SGA, EPC Merger

Two major campus organizations are considering a proposal that would turn the Big Four into the Big Three.

Their proposal would dissolve SGA and the Eagle Production Company [EPC] and form a new organization - The Student Association.

For approximately ten weeks, the Student Government Association [SGA] has been working on this idea in a committee chaired by Junior Class President Tyler Engle.

Administration Explains Tuition Increase

The decision to raise tuition for the 2010-2011 school year was a difficult one, according to college officials.
On January 21, continuing students received a letter from President Randall O'Brien announcing a 9.02 percent tuition hike.
The administration considered a wide array of factors in making the decision.

Career Showcase Set for March 4

The Life Direction Center is hosting a career fair to provide opportunities for current students to obtain professional contacts and job experience.

The event will be hosted on March 4th, at the MSAC three-gym area from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fair is a CLW credit, providing that the students stay for 45 minutes or longer.

S.P.O.T.S. Plans Annual Spring Break Trips

Campus ministries is planning the annual Special Projects Other Than Summer (SPOTS) Spring Break mission trips. This break, SPOTS has added the following three new locations: Bruswick, GA, Flushing Queens, NY, and Leon, Nicarauga.

The dates of the trips vary, but the majority will leave the first day of Spring Break, March 11 and all of them will return by Saturday, March 20.

ROTC Celebrates Purpose at Military Ball

On the Saturday of Valentine's weekend, the ROTC Eagle Battalion hosted their annual Military Ball. The Military Ball is a time when the unit can share in a more formal time of recognition as well as build morale, motivation and esprit de corps.

This year the black tie event was held on campus at Stokely Memorial Cafeteria.

Nursing Student Recognized for Quality Care

A Carson-Newman nursing student will be honored next month for her devotion to patients and quality care. January was a snowy month in Tennessee, and Angela, a graduate nursing student, was out in the worst of the weather making house calls. A patient with lung cancer and pneumonia located near Carson-Newman needed delivery of her medicine, and Angela volunteered to do so.

SAA Crowns Dance Champ

SAA held its second annual "So You Think You Can Dance," competition Monday night February 15. Ben Backstrom was the winner this year. There were a total of three different groups. Backstom was the only solo act of the night. The Vice President of SAA came up with the idea for this last year because they liked the show and they were also looking for new ways to promote SAA and recruit new people for it.

Butler New Home of Admissions & Financial Aid

Butler Hall is a different atmosphere than it was two years ago. The colorful bulletin boards that were once adorned with information about the RA's have been replaced by tasteful black and white photos of campus. Theatre Production Donates to Food Pantry

Bonner Scholars assisted in a food drive for Appalachian Outreach with the help of CN Theater.

On opening night of the C-N Theater's presentation of The Grapes of Wrath, a team of Bonner Scholars stood at the gates to collect canned food, hygiene items and financial donations as a way of assisting Appalachian Outreach.

In more than 2½ years of attending the productions of the C-N Theatre, I have never been more unknowledgeable of what I was going to witness. I have seen Shakespearean work involve dancing to Michael Jackson, makeup jobs that make someone look like Darth Maul and countless other memorable, if not indelible, moments, but this time around I was not sure as to what fruit the drama would bear, pun intended.

In the most recent edition of the Orange & Blue, you wrote an article entitled "Lack of interest leaves SGA cabinet seats open." In this article, several important items were left out that I feel should have been mentioned. The article as it reads now makes it sound as though SGA hasn't done much and will continue not to because of lacking numbers and a small budget.

Softball Opens Defense of Conference Championship

The Lady Eagles have begun their season with hopes of repeating last year's success. The 2009 SAC champions advanced to the Southeast SuperRegionals and finished the season 21st in the nation .

Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season

The men's basketball team broke a 5 game losing streak on senior night at Holt Feildhouse beating LMU 78-75. Senior guard Jordan Dixon had a career high 25 points as C-N swept past LMU in his final home game of the season.

The Eagles, finishing 10-15 (overall), and 5-9 (SAC), were 21 of 27 from the free throw line and shot 9 of 17 from behind the arc.

Kyle Joins 1000-point Club

Dedication and hard work have paid off senior basketballer Ashley Kyle, Kyle recently made her 1000th point of her career during the recent game against Mars Hill.

Kyle started playing basketball when she was six years old. She played for a recreational team that her dad coached, but says she did not get much playing time because she was so small.

Baseball Opens Conference Play against Railsplitters

Baseball opened conference last weekend against the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters. The Eagles went into the weekend with a record of 3-2.

In the first game after trailing the Railsplitters by nine runs, the Eagles came back and made it a two run deficit.
